April 2008

SVMBA hosts another Saturday "BIG RIDE"

WHEN - Saturday April 26th at 11:00 am (start time)

WHERE - Anglers Ridge (north trailhead - Stinson Road)

WHAT - Race Route "BIG RIDE"

WHO -  Our "Fat Tire Friends" - All Skill Levels

Get ready for a great day of riding as SVMBA hosts another Saturday "BIG RIDE" and this time we mean BIG.  SVMBA and it's members invite our Fat Tire Friends from around the region to celebrate the arrival of Spring and the Angler's Ridge Trails of Danville, VA.

The Triangle Off Road Cyclists (TORC) and it's members are planning on joining us and we look forward to the company of everyone from Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Roanoke (Virginia) and Lynchburg (Virginia).  The invitation is open to everyone and we want this to be a regional event that is enjoyed by all.

This ride will be a race route preview promoting not just our trails, but also our Virginia Derailer race - "The Southside Scramble" scheduled for the following week AND also our Southern Classic Series race "The Shootout on Anglers Ridge" in June.  SVMBA members will be on hand to show everyone a great day of riding hospitality.

This year's race route features 14.5 miles of the great trails at Anglers (Race Map).  Check out our helmet-cam video to get an idea of what you can expect this weekend and on race day (VIDEO - Helmetcam).

Plan on arriving around 10:30 am for an 11:00 am start for the ride.  Parking will be on the north end of the park just as we do for race day (see race map link above).  Driving directions are on our site (click here).

SVMBA will be providing Gatorade and ClifBars to fuel our ride.  We plan on taking a break for lunch around 1:00 pm and continue riding after lunch for a great day of riding at Angler's Ridge.

For more information please e-mail us at svmbainfo(at)comcast(dot)net and or click on our link to the left and we'll get back to you as soon as we're able.

SVMBA Hosts First Annual "FAT TIRE SOCIAL" this past Spring.

Thanks to all of you who came out last night to our first ever "Fat Tire Social".  I was really pleased with the turnout and hope that all of you had a great time.  I know that I did!

And, we had some excitement to boot thanks to one of our 'little riders'.  We had some of Danville's finest pay us a visit from the local fire dept.  No worries, only a false alarm but a great story to say the least.

We were also fortunate to bring on some new members, as well as many renewals. We sold some gear as well!  The pizzas Papa Johns provided were great and it was just an all around good time. Thanks to Jason Turner and his family for bringing the inflatable Spider-man room for the kids to have something fun to do.

SVMBA would like to thank Danville's Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism for suggesting the Pepsi Building as a location for our our event.  What a great opportunity to connect with current and prospective members while also promoting Danville mountain biking and The Anglers Ridge Trail System.  It was certainly a great opportunity to learn more about the club and what the future holds for SVMBA.

History of the Pepsi Building

The Pepsi Building was first used as a bottling facility in 1885 for C.T. Brown as a branch of the Continental Brewing Company, then as the Robert Portner Brewing Company.  With the advent of prohibition, the Portner Brewing Company became the Celery Cola Bottling Company in 1931.  Today, the building is being used for community recreation programs, special events, public meetings, and rentals.  The building has a capacity of 125 persons in the upstairs community room with the basement portion housing public restrooms for use in conjunction with events held in the adjacent Carrington Pavilion.
