February 2008

2008.02.17 - I would like to send everyone out an
invitation to our 1st annual 'Fat Tire Social' so mark your calendars. On
Saturday, April 5th at the Pepsi building (at the Crossing) from 5p.m. -
9p.m we will be having a mountain bike club social. Refreshments will be
offered from 6:00 - 8:30. byob... this is a family social so if anyone
decides to bring adult beverages lets be discreet about it. We will offer
cups for those who may want a beer or two.. We want this to be fun for
everyone!!
You are more than welcome to bring a guest or someone
you may think will be interested in joining SVMBA. Let's make this a
mini-membership drive if you will. This will also be a good time to renew
your membership if you so choose. We will have all of our gear (shirts,
caps, beanies, socks, etc...) for sale at the event, as well as some video
of past rides, meetings, and other cool stuff. We want this to be a time
where members can meet one another and socialize 'off the trail.'
There will also be a couple of guest speakers, including
myself and more than likely Chris T., to bring everyone up to speed on the
direction of the club, races, planned EPIC club trips and trail work success
stories from Danville and Philpott.
Remember, this is a casual social. We want to have a
good time and meet some new faces so come join us for some 'off road'
fellowship.
Thanks,
Scott Buckner -president SVMBA-
2008.02.12 - Just a line to pass along the schedule
for trail work this weekend. The Fat Tire Society is planning a work day
for the xc trails at Country Park on Saturday, and on Sunday we will be
sprucing up the dirt jumps and hopefully adding a pump track at the area of
Country Park called "the zone." Details are still being worked out, but
times are set to start at around 9am and. go on until..... I'll be working
on some trails in the Chatmoss area of Martinsville along with the HCBC on
Saturday from 9am until 1pm. Anyone interested in helping out at any of
these work parties feel free to drop me a line at
ibike12@yahoo.com.
On another note, we had a large group of about 10 come
out to Angler's and battle the wind for a great ride this past Sunday.
Several in this group were from the G-boro and Burlington areas and had
never ridden there before. Newest section of Crooked Stick rocks! (berms
felt great if I do say so myself). I feel sure they will return soon ride
the great trail system that Danville is becoming known
for.
Thanks!
Steve Luke - SVMBA

2008.02.09 - The good news is we had a good turnout
for trailwork today and was able to get some work done on 'Crooked Stick.'
Thanks to everyone who participated.
The bad news is that we had someone steal a wheelset from
the parking lot as we were working. Drew Arnn, a fellow club member, had his
mountain bike locked up on his Jeep while we were out working and someone had
the nerve to steal his wheels off his bike right there in broad daylight. If
anyone has heard or seen anything suspicious please let us know. Otherwise
keep your gear locked up if you are away from your vehicle for any period of
time.
Thanks,
Scott Buckner -president SVMBA-

2008.02.06 - I hope everyone was able to see
SVMBA's first visit to a Danville City council meeting last night on the
Danville channel. The council seemed to be receptive of our
organization's accomplishments with regard to making Danville a 'Happy
and Healthy' city to reside with regards to mountain biking. If anyone
has any questions about last nights council meeting please feel free to
contact me.
On a different note our monthly trailwork session
will be held this coming Saturday, Feb. 9th at Anglers parking lot.
Let's meet at 9:00 there at the boat ramp and go from there. Our main
focus is to continue to work on the section of trail that was flagged at
the last work day. Hope to see everyone there!!
Thank you,
Scott

2008.02.04 - This coming Thursday (6:00p.m.), at
Coates Recreation Center on Westover Drive, Danville Parks and
Recreation will be doing a t.v. special on the Danville channel
describing their upcoming activities and events. If anyone is available
to represent SVMBA and maybe speak on behalf of the club's spring and
summer events please contact me or Jason Bookheimer. I cannot attend b/c
of work but I would like for someone to attend if possible.
Jason's number is 799-5215. If anyone can attend I will bring you up to
speed on the races and events we have planned and give you dates and
descriptions of both.
Thanks, Scott Buckner
SVMBA

2008.02.01 - I trust everyone is having a good
weekend and are taking advantage of this great weather we are having
today. Kind of nice for February that's for sure! I'd like to take this
opportunity to thank Jason Turner for his commitment to the
vice-presidency of our mountain bike club. At the last board meeting Jason
let us all know that he was going to have to step down from the position.
Between family and school at Liberty he is finding hardly any spare time
to devote to the seat. We totally understand Jason and wish you all the
luck in the world with your endeavors. Thank you again for all you have
done to make SVMBA and Anglers Park successful!
On a different note, Chris Tompkins has been working
double-time, no let me rephrase that, triple time on being both secretary
and treasurer and getting everyone's tax paperwork delivered. Chris'
dedication to both positions has to be commended and is very appreciated.
Thank you for all you do Chris! How you find the time is beyond me. Many
sleepless nights I'm sure of that. With that said, we need to take some of
the responsibilities off of Chris so he can focus more energy into his
family and regular living. For six years now Chris has been the driving
force behind basically every direction the club has gone forward in. It's
time for him to relax and reap some of the fruits of his labors. I'd like
to suggest we help him out a bit. If anyone in the club would like to
become an assistant secretary or an assistant treasurer I'm sure Chris
would appreciate it greatly. Eventually these positions once learned could
become the responsibilility of the assistant but only by their request. We
don't want anybody to feel pressured into taking over these duties unless
they ultimately want to. So, if anyone has any free time to devote to one
of these positions please let Chris or I know.
The future of our club, as well as the future of
mountain biking in Danville and the surrounding areas depends on our
passion to make all things considered a success. I personally will devote
a little more time to helping out when and where I can. Between trail
building/ maintenance, mtb races, kids events (Bike Blast), securing
sponsors, fund raisers, building upon membership, and riding, we stay
pretty busy as a club. I ask you to join me in the progressive, grass
roots movement that is mountain biking in Southern Virginia!!
Thank you,
Scott Buckner -president SVMBA-
