January 2008

2008.01.31 - Tax time is here and I'm almost finished with everyone's tax letters.  Officially, they have to be sent to you by midnight tonight and available for you to take to your tax preparer first thing in the morning.

Again, I'm almost done with them all, including our Corporate/Business Sponsors.  I believe I can have them e-mailed to you by midnight.  If you don't receive them in your Inbox by 8:00am in the morning please let me know and I will resend them in the morning, especially if you're planning on knocking down the door of H.& R. Block to be first in line.

Please call me if you have any questions regarding the amount of your contribution.  Please keep in mind that the amount of your "tax-free" contribution (i.e. Donation) must be offset by anything "of value" that you received from SVMBA (i.e. Stickers, Hats, T-shirts, etc)

Thanks for everyone's patience . . . does anyone want to be Treasurer? (Ha Ha) :)

Chris Tompkins
Treasurer - SVMBA

2008.01.29 - Bill Sgrinia, from Parks, Recreation and Tourism, just called and told me that we have someone coming in and cutting timber out of our park without permission. The area in which these timber thieves are working are around the crossover from 'Camelbak' to 'Hot Tamale' near the 'Riverwalk trail'. Apparently they have been coming in after dark and cutting down trees and taking them out at the Stinson Road area. Please help us keep an eye out for these guys.

Bill has contacted the police dept. and they are going to be watching a little closer as well. Basically, if you are riding at night and hear a chainsaw running or actually spot the perps please call the police. You can rest assured that no city crew will be out there after dark.
We like our dense forest and that is what makes singletrack riding so special is the canopy it provides. Especially in the summer. Just keep your eyes and ears open.

    Thanks,

    Scott

2008.01.27 - I hope everyone was able to see our write up in the 'Dan River Life' section of the Danville Register and Bee today. It was a picture of Bradley Hairston, the young man who received the bike at Christmas from our first annual 'Christmas Bike Giveaway.' It mentions the club's generous donation and our plans for more bikes to be given away in the future.

I'm happy about our recognition but more thrilled that Bradley's Christmas was a good one due to your donations and the club's dedication to get our kids in the community on bikes!!

Thanks,

Scott Buckner

2008.01.23 - Hey all, I believe this upcoming Saturday is the first trail working day at Jamison's Mill at the lake.  Mary Lawson said she would have her machine there and I'll have ours too.  Joe Jessee has been doing some flagging to get ready.  If would be great to have a nice turnout at 9 am on the 26th of January to make a good showing.  I understand Mary is finalizing the the paperwork but we'll be fine to have a great day all working together.  The SVMBA trailer would be appreciated with its tools.  Joe and Ellen Jessee bought a number of other hand tools as well.  Some others have additional tools on order as well.  Personally excited to put all that IMBA trained enthusiasm to work.  Try to bring glasses, hardhat, gloves, and boots to the work day.  I'm trying to round up some extra hard hats and safety glasses too.

Thanks,

Jim Frith

2008.01.18 - I just wanted to let everyone know that we now have a 'race info' link to our website. If you are interested in what the 'Southern Classic' series is all about check it out. As of now we only have two race committee volunteers plus Chris Tompkins and myself. If this is something that you think you may be interested in please reply soon.

    Thank you,

    Scott Buckner

2008.01.14 - I wanted to take this time and wish everyone a Happy New Year and bring you up to speed on what's going on with SVMBA. First off I would like to thank everyone who participated in trailwork this past Saturday. What a turnout!! We had 14 volunteers show up to finish getting 'Crooked Stick Ext' trail groomed and ready to ride. We were able to build a second bridge, as well as tweak the existing bridge that was built a month ago. We also had enough folks to flag even a newer section of 'Crooked Stick' to add that much more mileage to our favorite trail! Again, thanks for your efforts.

In addition to this weekend's trailbuilding efforts we had our January board meeting last night. We were able to discuss future plans for Angler's park, as well as SVMBA's first attempt at a mountain bike race without the help of the City of Danville's Parks and Rec. dept. We will still have our annual 'Southside Scramble' Derailler Series race (Sat. May 3rd), but, we will also host our first ever mtb race that will be part of a larger series called the 'Big Southern Classic' race series. This is a big deal for our club, as well as for the City of Danville. This particular series encompasses South Carolina, North Carolina and now, thanks to us, Virginia. We need to represent our town and our club as professionally as possible. And that my friends is the main reason for this email!

I have two favors to ask you as a club member or just a rider who receives our email. First off I will start by asking if anyone would be interested in becoming a race committee member? We need to put together a race committee very soon to start planning for both races. Oh, and before I get ahead of myself, the second race will be Sat. June 8th. I know there are several club members who have a lot of interest in how the races are put on. Maybe you would consider being on the committee. There will probably be 5 -6 meetings, a couple with Parks and Rec. regarding the 'Southside Scramble' and several regarding our newest race set for June. It would be nice if we could establish a committee within the next month so we can start planning for the races. Just reply to this email if you have an interest in being part of the race committee.

The second favor, or contest I should say is, we don't have a name for our new race as of yet. Some of us thought that it would be a fun thing to do if we had a contest to see who could come up with the coolest name for the June race. Keep in mind that 'Southside Scramble' is already taken! There will be a prize for the most creative and crafty race name that we get. This, as well as the race committee needs to be in place within the next several weeks. So put your thinking cap on and let those creative juices flow and let's make 2008 a great year for mountain bike racing in Danville!!!

If anyone is interested in other topics of discussion at the board meeting, and there were a few others, just reply to this email and I will bring anyone up to speed.

      Thank you,

       Scott Buckner   -president SVMBA-

2008.01.01 - I trust everyone had a safe and happy holiday. I just wanted to send out a picture of Bradley with his new bike so everyone can see where their donation went to. It was really nice to see how happy the bike made Bradley and his Mom feel on Christmas. Thanks again to everyone who donated and a special thank you from the receiver of the gift. We should have it posted on the website soon for all to see the cheer that was spread.

    Thank you,

       Scott Buckner
